Jerseyland is a family owned and operated dairy in Grand Forks, B.C.
Ric & Vickie Llewellyn settled there in 1985 with their herd of pure bred Jersey cattle that now number 95(+) head. In 1994 Jerseyland Cheese began commercial production after completing its transition to "Certified Organic" status. Thus making Jerseyland B.C.'s & Western Canada's 1st "organic" dairy and Western Canada's 1st producer of organic cheeses and yogurts.

The Llewellyns committed themselves to the task of "organic transition" for several reasons: animal welfare and humane ethics, nutritional health of the dairy herd and the consumer, and a concern for sustainable agriculture - putting back into the land as much as you take out. By producing their own organic milk they are assured that there is no chemical, hormonal, or drug residue. The consumer can be assured of the integrity of the product by the symbol of the "check mark" on the container. This shows that a legitimate organic certification agency (Certified Organic Association of British Columbia - COABC) has examined the process and found it has met its strict standards.

At Jerseyland the name says it all, we have Jerseys - most people recognize them as the doe eyed, fawn coloured family cow. They are the second most common commercial diary breed in North America / Canada. At Jerseyland we selected the Jersey because we liked them! Incidental to that they produce more yield on cheese than the black and whites, they are friendlier (and smarter) and easier to handle too. The Jersey cow will eat 8000 lbs of dry forage and 6000 lbs of grain a year to maintain her 800 - 1000 body weight and produces approximately 4500 - 6000 liters of milk a year. The Jersey milk is famous for its creamy texture and taste, the creamy colour of the milk is from natural carotenes - the Jersey doesn't utilize this and passes it on through the milk. Carotene in itself possesses may heath attributes.

Llewellyn's raise all their own Jerseys from several cow family lines that they have had for many years. Many of the milking herd have three and four times the life expectancy of their commercial non-organic counterparts. We feel this is in part a result of their healthy active life style, never being confined, pasturing all summer & long hay instead of silage in the winter months. Supplements for the cattle are also naturally derived, organic grains, oil seeds, kelp meal and natural forms of minerals. All this appears to make contented healthy cows . . .

Calves at Jerseyland are raised by "nurse cows" until weaning at 6 months of age, and then fed grains, supplements and pasture or hay until they reach 2 years when they enter the milking herd. Boy calves are all raised on the Jerseyland farm as certified organic beef and live out their time on organic pasture and hay at our other farm. Llewellyn's don't believe in animal auctions and feedlots.
